Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 update battery issues

A number of Mac OS X Mountain Lion users have been experiencing decreased battery performance (as much as 40% which meant a reduction from 8-5 hours) on their MacBook Pro and MacBook Air notebooks after upgrading. Apple released an OS X 10.8.1 update last Thursday, but the update release notes didn’t mention the reported battery issues affecting Mac notebooks. The 10.8.1 update does appear to increase the battery life (in some cases by as much as an hour) for some users but other users are reporting no improvement at all.

Apple support About the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.1 Update

Apple is continuing to collect log data for analysis from some of the affected users, although this still isn’t “public” knowledge from Apple as of today (26th August). The fact Apple is collecting system data suggests the problem hasn’t gone away. Apple has been working on OS X 10.8.2, which can be confirmed from a released developer preview.

Does anyone remember similar battery issues concerning the Lion upgrade on MacBooks back in 2011? Seems it has happened again. Given the ongoing battery issues, I for one will be waiting for confirmation from Apple (and the developer community forums) that this problem has been fixed. Only then will I consider upgrading. My data, even if it is backed up and my personal time is too valuable to mess with.

Safe surfing folks!
