Sony PSN Network identity theft protection now live

Sony appears to be appeasing its US PSN customers, but doesn’t think it is important to look after its European, Asian and Japanese customers. :(Guess the value is in the dollar and US political might.  Sony is offering Debix AllClear ID PLUS as a premium identity protection service to ONLY US customers.

So what does AllClear ID PLUS offer? In simple terms it will alert PSN users in the event the Debix compromised data intelligence network identifies compromised personal data in the online world. The service will also be providing identity theft insurance coverage and over-the-phone identity fraud investigators. This will be available for 12 months for account holders in the US with active accounts as of April 20th, 2011. TIP: What can you do to protect your PSN profile data?

The main reason the Debix identity theft protection service isn’t being offered in other countries is that identity protection services (other than Internet Surveillance, but this can also be country specific) are country specific and cannot provide a comprehensive global identity theft protection coverage.

If you are interested in subscribing to this service, you must submit your email address (the same email address you used to register your PlayStation Network or Qriocity account). Once validated, you will be sent your AllClear ID PLUS activation code.

Safe surfing folks!

A notice on Sony’s official Playstation blog site announced that sign ups for the service, provided by AllClear ID Plus and first announced on May 8, have now been extended to July 31 for US users. The same post said that PSN users in Canada and also in countries located in Latin America will learn more about their identity protection plans “soon”. No news yet on whether this also applies to European users.
