Manage your Google account security settings

Google allows you to aggregate all it’s services, which means you can access everything with a universal username and password (similar to OpenID). This is great for ease of access but not necessarily good for privacy. Lose your password and you lose access to everything in your Google account. Here are some simple steps for securing your Google account settings:

  • Open www.google.com/accounts and sign in with your credentials
  • Under ‘Manage products’ you can manage the settings for each Google product
  • Click ‘Change password recovery options’ located under Personal Settings – specify a second email address or mobile number to which password recovery information can be sent*
  • Choose a password-reset security question – make it unique and not guessable
  • Click ‘Save’ to return to the account summary page
  • Click ‘Change authorized websites’ under Personal Settings to see which websites and applications have access to your Google accounts
  • You can revoke access to any website by clicking the appropriate link
  • Click ‘My Account’ at the top right corner when finished

*This is useful if you forget your email and if someone has guessed your password because you will be notified by email or mobile.

Google Dashboard

  • Click ‘View data stored with this account’ link to show you accounts that are active and manage them
  • Note: You will be unable to close accounts with any of the listed services from this page
  • Click ‘My Account’ at the top right corner when finished

Google Profile**

  • Click ‘Edit profile’ under Profile on the main Google accounts screen
  • Click ‘Create a profile’ if you don’t have one
  • Click on the ‘About me’ tab to review your basic personal information
  • Consider disabling ‘Display my full name’; ‘Allow people to contact me’ and ‘Display the list of people I’m following’ options on the right of the page
  • Also at the bottom of the page you will see who has linked to your profile along with the option to delete your profile if you wish

** The data here is visible at www.google.com/profiles/your Google account name

Google Photo tab

  • Click on the ‘Contact info’ tab and you may find more contact details. If you want visibility on Google you might want to fill in this information
  • Otherwise, scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see options to limit access based on Google Contacts groups.
  • If groups are not enabled, none of the information in ‘Contact info’ can be seen by anyone other than you
Safe surfing folks!
